The annual Namibian seal slaughter is poised to begin. More than 85,000 nursing seal pups will be massacred solely for their fur, and around 6,000 bulls for their body parts, which will be used in aphrodisiacs. The slaughter is now the biggest killing of wildlife in the world, and is an infringement of Namibia's own Animal Protection Act. Independent observers have concluded the killing methods to be cruel and inhumane, the seal pups vomiting mother's milk as they are savagely beaten to death. Beauty Without Cruelty SA, in collaboration with Fur Free SA, staged a funeral march for the seals through the suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday July 1. In response to the international outcry about stray dogs being killed in the streets of many cities within Ukraine, the international animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS launched a large-scale stray animal neutering, vaccination, and release program in April 2012. The Project is already supported by the cities of Kiev, Lviv, Zaporozhye, and Donetsk. More cities are expected to join in soon. FOUR PAWS' team is made up of seven mobile clinics and a similar number of rescue cars as well as dozens of international experts and dozens of volunteers.

On July 5, FOUR PAWS, with the support of the Ukrainian Authorities, freed five month old baby bear Nastia, who was brutally snatched from her mother and illegally sold to animal traders by the Lutsk Zoo. The bear cub is now in FOUR PAWS' care. Although Nastia is safe now, the question remains whether she will be recognised by her mother. Within the next days, FOUR PAWS plans to reunite mother and cub. FOUR PAWS is also looking for the best solution to ensure both bears get species-appropriate life from now on. Description:
This horrible footage documents the forceful removal of a baby bear from her mother at the Lutsk Zoo, Ukraine, and gives an understanding of the strong bond between the two. The impact for the baby bear can be imagined by some of the scenes documented. FOUR PAWS calls for the urgent confiscation of both bears and for the attempt to reunite them. FOUR PAWS will act and support the Ukraine authorities to make such confiscation logistically possible and supervise the proper care-taking at any stage with international experts. FOUR PAWS strongly hopes that the Ukraine authorities take action, which they have done in previous weeks, when FOUR PAWS already supervised the confiscation and hand over of four other bears that have been transferred to the bear rescue centre in Synevyr, Ukraine. The footage documents the continued trade in young bears and their outrageous exploitation which also undermines any efforts by the Ukraine authorities to manage the problem. This trade has to stop.

There are about 100 brown bears living in very poor captive conditions across the Ukraine. Most of them are living in small cages next to restaurants, hotels or petrol stations. The bears are undernourished and ill. Many of them have to perform tricks to entertain tourists and to drink alcohol.
Bears are the largest land-based-carnivores on earth – solitary animals who roam around huge areas in the wild. Many bears suffer from disorders, physical deformities, and behavioural issues caused by inappropriate long term care. They cannot be released. In Ukraine there has been a ban on private bear ownership since last year. But the Ukrainian authorities are faced with a serious problem: They cannot confiscate bears, because the know-how and equipment in order to treat and transport the animals is often missing.
FOUR PAWS has been working on protecting bears for years and runs bear sanctuaries in Austria, Germany, and Bulgaria, where numerous rescued animals are being cared for. In an agreement of 3 February 2012, FOUR PAWS assured the Ukrainian Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of its commitment to not only help stray dogs, but also the abused bears. FOUR PAWS provides urgently required medicines, medical equipment and a mobile bear ambulance. The organisation’s wildlife experts examine the bears, prepare them for the transport, and bring them to the first Bear Care Centre Synevyr in the Ukraine, which was opened just a few months ago. There the bears are able to lead a life appropriate for their species in a huge compound where they can rediscover their instincts. Four bears have already been saved by FOUR PAWS and brought to the Bear Care Centre Synevyr. Others will follow. The video is the copyright of FOUR PAWS.
