Funeral March for the Seals
The annual Namibian seal slaughter is poised to begin. More than 85,000 nursing seal pups will be massacred solely for their fur, and around 6,000 bulls for their body parts, which will be used in aphrodisiacs. The slaughter is now the biggest killing of wildlife in the world, and is an infringement of Namibia's own Animal Protection Act. Independent observers have concluded the killing methods to be cruel and inhumane, the seal pups vomiting mother's milk as they are savagely beaten to death. Beauty Without Cruelty SA, in collaboration with Fur Free SA, staged a funeral march for the seals through the suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday July 1.
